  137. Before you begin the actual installation of the hardware and software, there 
  138. are some preliminary steps that you need to do.

  144. The installation requires that you gather the following tools and supplies.

  152.   interface cables (20-pin data cables & 34-pin control cable)

  154.   DOS version 2.0 or later (DOS 3.1 or later recommended)

  156.   installation manual for XT compatible computer

  158.   installation manual for hard disk drive

  161. IDENTIFY DRIVE
  162. **************************************************************************
  163.  
  164. The WDXT-GEN2R board works with any hard disk drive that has the ST506/412 
  165. drive interface and no more than 1024 cylinders and 15 heads. The Seagate 238 
  166. hard disk drive unit is such a drive.
  167.  
  168. Look in your drive manual to verify that you have an ST506/412 RLL drive or 
  169. check with your dealer.
  170.  
  171. Then check the drive manual for the drive parameters, such as those listed in 
  172. Table 1-1. You'll need this information to select the proper low level format.

  181. This board works with RLL drives. If you have an MFM drive you should use the 
  182. WDXT-GEN2 board.

  185. IDENTIFY BOARD

  188. The WDXT-GEN2R board comes in 2 versions. One version has a drive power 
  189. connector (J4) and the other version does not. These controllers are identical 
  190. electrically except for the power connector.

  200. Figure 1-1 shows the connector locations (J1, J2, J3, J4, and J5) on the WDXT-
  201. GEN2R board and the location of the jumper pins (R17 to R23 and R25 to R28). 
  202. The (J4) drive power connector is optional on the WDXT-GEN2R board. It is there 
  203.  
  204. to connect power to FileCard drives. 
  205.  
  206. BIOS ROM Incompatibility
  207.  
  208. BIOS is an acronym for Basic Input Output System. ROM is an acronym for Read 
  209. Only Memory. The BIOS ROM is a program on a computer chip that tells your 
  210. computer how to operate devices attached to your computer.
  211.  
  212. Some XT compatible computers do not operate with the Western Digital BIOS ROM 
  213. because of an incompatibility. Most of these computers are listed in Appendix 
  214. A. Check Appendix A to see if you have one of these computers.
  215.  
  216. If this is the case, you need to disable the BIOS ROM by setting a jumper. If 
  217. you have one of these computers, omit the low level format in this guide and 
  218. instead follow your computer manufacturer's software installation instructions 
  219. for low level formatting.

  266. JUMPER RESISTORS

  269. Jumper resistors are tiny wires, which when installed between pairs of pin 
  270. locations on a board, turn certain functions on or off. Western Digital set the 
  271.  
  272. jumper resistors for the most common applications. It is unlikely that you will 
  273.  
  274. need to change any of the jumper resistor settings.
  275.  
  276.                                      CAUTION
  277.

  282. To disable the BIOS ROM, place a jumper at R23. See Appendix B for more 
  283. details.

  285.   Do I Need To Change Any Jumpers?
  286.  
  287.  
  288. No. Do NOT change any jumper resistors on the GEN2R board, unless you have one 
  289. of the following conditions:
  290.  
  291.   The GEN2R board is your second hard disk controller in the system.
  292.  
  293.   You have another peripheral unit which uses  interrupt signal IRQ5.
  294.  
  295.   You have a BIOS ROM which is incompatible with GEN2R.
  296.  
  297.   You have a hard disk drive whose parameters are different from those listed 
  298. in Table 1-1. This requires you to do the dynamic configuration.
  299.  
  300. See the Appendix B for a list of the jumper resistor functions.
  301.  
  302.  
  303.   Change Jumper Resistors
  304.  
  305. When you have one of the special conditions listed above, you need to add a 
  306. jumper resistor. In all other cases, do NOT add a jumper resistor.
  307.  
  308.  
  309.   If the GEN2R board is the second controller, change the controller address at 
  310.  
  311. R21 & R22. Check the first controller manufacturer's manual for the addresses 
  312. and also see Appendix B.
  313.  
  314.   If another peripheral uses IRQ5, add a jumper at R27.
  315.  
  316.   If the system BIOS ROM is incompatible, add a jumper at R23.
  317.  
  318.   If you plan to do a dynamic configuration, remove the jumper at R25 and place 
  319.  
  320. it at R26.

  333. SET HARD DISK DRIVE CONFIGURATION
  334. **************************************************************************

  336. This section "Set Hard Disk Drive Configuration" refers to procedures that you 
  337. do to your hard disk drives and not to your GEN2R controller. Since the GEN2R 
  338. board works with many hard disk drives, you need to consult your drive 
  339. manufacturer's manual for exact details.
  340.  
  341.  You need to set the configuration for your hard disk drive unit, before you 
  342. install the unit into your computer. You set your hard disk configuration by 
  343. adjusting jumpers, switches, or termination resistors on the hard disk unit.
  344.  
  345.   Drive Settings
  346.  
  347.  
  348. The two settings that you can change are:
  349.  
  350.   drive number
  351.  
  352.   drive termination resistor
  353.  
  354.  
  355. You frequently don't have to modify the factory settings. The exact number of 
  356. settings that you change depends on your disk drive and computer.
  357.  
  358.   Control Cables
  359.  
  360. Setting the drive number depends on the type of control cable that connects 
  361. your drive to your controller board. The two types of cables are listed below.
  362.  
  363.   flat, non-twist (ribbon) cable
  364.  
  365.   flat, twisted (ribbon) cable
  366.

  368. Do NOT use cables from floppy drives. Hard disk cables are different!
  369. ***********************************************************************
  370.  
  371. First identify which cable you are going to use. Look at the control cable and 
  372. determine whether it is twisted. The control cable has the 34-pin connectors.

  383. If you already have one hard disk attached to your WDXT-GEN2R board and you 
  384. plan to use the existing cable in your computer, you may have to open the 
  385. computer case. See your computer manufacturer's instructions.

  398.   Set Drive Number
  399.  
  400. When the 34-pin control cable is a twisted cable, set the jumpers or switches 
  401. on both drives for drive select 2.
  402.  
  403. When the 34-pin control cable has NO twisted section, set a jumper or switch on 
  404.  
  405. the first drive for drive select 1 and the other for drive select 2.
  406.  
  407. See the drive manufacturer's manual for detailed instructions on how to set the 
  408.  
  409. drive number.
  410.  
  411.   Set Drive Termination Resistor
  412.  
  413. The drive termination resistor should only be on the drive, which is the last 
  414. physical drive installed in a daisy chain configuration. When you have two hard 
  415.  
  416. disk drives, remove or disable the termination resistor from the drive, which 
  417. you plan to attach to the middle connector. 
  418.  
  419. If you have only one fixed hard disk drive, do NOT change the termination 
  420. resistor. Drives are set at the factory as the first hard disk drive (i.e., to 
  421. be the only drive in the system).
  422.  
  423. See the drive manufacturer's manual for detailed instructions on how to remove 
  424. or disable the termination resistor.
  425.  
  426. Note: A daisy chain cable has three connectors. The electrical signal in a 
  427. daisy chain configuration moves from one connection to the next in sequence.
  428.

  430. CHECK  COMPUTER
  431. (Incompatible System BIOS ROM)
  432. **************************************************************************
  433.  
  434. Some early versions of XT computers have system BIOS ROMs that are incompatible 
  435.  
  436. with your WDXT-GEN2R. Follow the instructions in the next section "Read System 
  437. BIOS ROM Date" to determine if you have one of these systems.
  438.  
  439.   Read System BIOS ROM Date
  440.  
  441. DEBUG is a program which allows you to look at information in your computer on 
  442. a fundamental level. You can enter the Debug program and use it to read a 
  443. portion of your computer's ROM (read only memory). By following the steps 
  444. below, you can determine the date the system BIOS ROM was created for your 
  445. computer.
  446.  
  447. The Debug program should be supplied on your DOS diskette. See your DOS system 
  448. manual for complete instructions on how to use the Debug program.
  449.  
  450. Place the diskette containing the Debug program in drive A, then
  451.  
  452. 1. At the A> prompt,
  453.

  531.                           HOW TO INSTALL YOUR HARDWARE

  533. This section tells you how to install the hardware portion of your WDXT-GEN2R 
  534. controller board. You can install the controller board in any available XT-
  535. compatible expansion slot.
  536.  
  537. Do not attempt to install your hardware unless you have set the hard disk drive 
  538.  
  539. configuration as explained on page 1-7 and set the GEN2R board jumper 
  540. resistors, if required.
  541.  
  542. The installation requires you to remove the cover from your computer. See your 
  543. PC manual for exact instructions on how to remove the cover.
  544.  
  545. If you are replacing an existing controller, then you also have to remove your 
  546. old hard disk controller.
  547.  
  548. If you want two hard disks on one controller, use a daisy chain cable 
  549. to connect them onto one GEN2R board. A daisy chain cable has 3 connectors.
  550.  
  551. 1. Turn your computer power switch to OFF.
  552.  
  553. 2. Use a screwdriver to loosen the cover screws. Then remove the computer     
  554.    cover, so that you can see the expansion slots.
  555.  
  556. 3. Place your hard disk drive unit(s) into the computer case and attach per
  557.    the manufacturer's installation instructions.
  558.  
  559. 4. Look and see which expansion slots are empty. You can use any empty slot
  560.    that has the same type of edge connectors as the GEN2R board, except as
  561.    noted below.
  562.  
  563. Note: For IBM XT owners: DO NOT use the slot closest to the power supply. Use 
  564. an expansion slot at least one position removed from the power supply.
  565.  
  566. You may have to leave the drive case loosely connected, so that you can attach 
  567. the cables.  Or if you are removing a controller, locate the one which has the 
  568. old controller in it. Use this expansion slot.
  569.  
  570. Note: You can also install a new fixed hard disk drive on an existing 
  571. controller. See Appendix A.
  572.  
  573. 5A. If you are removing an old controller, loosen the screw which holds the old 
  574.  
  575. controller board in place. Then slide the old board out of the expansion slot 
  576. and remove the cables. Locate the old bracket cover and place it on your 
  577. computer case. (You probably removed this old bracket cover when you installed 
  578. your old controller board.)
  579.  
  580. 5B. If you are using a "new" expansion slot, remove the screw, but keep the 
  581. bracket cover in place. Save the screw to hold the new controller board.
  582.  
  583. 6. Connect 34-pin wide control cable to GEN2R board. Follow steps A or B. These 
  584.  
  585. instructions are for both one or two drives on the same controller.
  586.

  596. A. (for 1 drive only) Connect the 34-pin (wide control cable) connector to J1 
  597. on the controller board. Attach Pin 1 of the cable connector to Pin 1 on the 
  598. controller board. See Figure 1-1 on page 1-4.
  599.  
  600. Pin 1 of the cable connector is marked and is on the color coded edge of the 
  601. cable. Do NOT force the cables and connectors.
  602.  
  603. B. (for 2 drives only) If you are installing two hard disk drives on one 
  604. controller, use a daisy chain cable. A daisy chain cable has 3 connectors.
  605.  
  606. Connect the 34-pin wide connector on the longer length daisy chain cable to J1 
  607. on the GEN2R board. See Figure 1-1 and Figure 2-1.

  663. 8. Connect 20-pin data cable(s) to the drive unit(s) 20-pin connectors. Attach 
  664. one 20-pin data cable to the first hard disk drive unit. If you are installing 
  665. a second drive attach the second 20-pin data cable to the second hard disk 
  666. drive unit.
  667.  
  668. 9. Connect 20-pin data cable(s) to the GEN2R board as described below.
  669.  
  670.  
  671. A. Connect the 20-pin data cable from the first drive to J2 on the controller 
  672. board. Attach Pin 1 on the cable to Pin 1 on the controller board. See Figure 1-
  673.  
  674. 1 on page 1-4.
  675.  
  676. B. (for 2 drives only) If you install a second hard disk drive, connect the 
  677. second 20-pin data cable from the second drive to J3 on the controller board. 
  678. See Figure 1-1 on page 1-4.

  681. 10. (optional for systems with LED cables) Connect the 4-pin external LED cable 
  682.  
  683. connector to J5 on the controller board.
  684.  
  685. 11. Connect the 4-pin power connector. See either A or B.
  686.  
  687.  
  688. A. Locate the internal 4-pin power connector(s) on your computer. See your 
  689. computer manual. Connect this internal 4-pin power connector to your fixed hard 
  690.  
  691. disk drive unit's power connector plug.
  692.  
  693. B. (for 2 drives only) If you are installing 2 drives, you need either two 
  694. internal power connectors on your computer or you need to split the power 
  695. connector. See the manufacturer's manual.
  696.  
  697. Connect the second drive unit to the second power connector plug.
  698.  
  699.  
  700. 12. Install the controller board into the expansion slot that you selected in 
  701. step 4. The GEN2R's edge connectors (shown in Figure 1-1, page 1-4) fit firmly 
  702. into the computer's motherboard.) See your computer manual  for the location of 
  703.  
  704. your computer's motherboard. Press firmly on the GEN2R board as you insert it 
  705. into the expansion slot. Check that the board is seated properly by pressing 
  706. down firmly on both ends of the board. 
  707.  
  708. 13. After the board is seated firmly in the expansion slot socket, secure the 
  709. board using the clip that is on the end of your board. Place the bracket screw 
  710. (which you removed in step 5) over the clip and bracket cover. Then screw the 
  711. clip and bracket cover to the computer chassis.
  712.

  714.  
  715. When routing cables, be careful not to pinch them. Cables must not get caught 
  716. between the cover and the boards nor should they obstruct any air flow path 
  717. from fans or vents.
